    4 MAY STREET

    LONDON, W.C.2.

    (Date in full).

    DEAR ROBIN,

It was with great pleasure that I read in the paper this morning of your appointment as Actuary and General Manager of the Manchester Merchants Life Insurance Company. This is an achievement indeed, but not more than you deserve. It is good to know that recognition has come your way so quickly. I trust that this appointment will give you even greater scope for both service to your profession and personal achievement. Please accept my heartiest congratulations and best wishes for the future.

    Yours very sincerely,

    JOHN DYSON

  • Ladies No. 57—Request to a Lady to Open a Fete

    THE GROVE

    LITTLE RUSTINGTON

    DORSET.

    (Date in full).

    DEAR LADY CUMMINGS,

The Little Rustington branch of the Refugee Children’s Aid Society is planning to hold a small garden fete in May and the Committee would feel honoured if you would agree to perform the opening ceremony.

No doubt you already know of this worthy cause which for some years now has brought help and comfort in varied ways, to those who are suffering through no fault of their own. I enclose one of the most recent leaflets about their work. We want to make our fete a really successful effort and the presence of yourself as patron would undoubtedly be a very great help to the cause.

We have not finally settled upon the actual date, as knowing how busy your ladyship is, we felt it might be preferable for you to name the most convenient day. The Vicar has kindly agreed to lend us the Vicarage garden on any day in the second half of May.

May we hope that you will help our cause in this way?

    Yours truly,

    JANE FEVEREL,

    Hon. Sec.

  • Ladies No. 14—Informal Invitation to a Small Dance

    DEAR Mrs. Jones,

The girls have persuaded me to arrange a little dance for them during the Christmas holidays, and we plan to have it on Thursday the 17th. Will you and your daughters and your older boy give us the pleasure of your company on that evening at eight o’clock? We should so much like to see your husband also; but I seem to remember he does not care for dancing; still if you can persuade him to come too, we should be so pleased.

    Yours sincerely,

    HELEN BROWN

    17 Charters Villas,

    Bushey.
